Overview

Summary

University of Oregon had the opportunity to implement a new bin system on campus, they began by identifying colleges and universities that had zero waste programs in place that were seeing success. Max-R was recognized as a constant fixture on successful campuses across the country. In conjunction with university leadership and campus operations, the UO Zero Waste team identified what was important to them in a zero waste station.

The ability to customize and create a bin specific to the UO Zero Waste program was key. With specific serviceability requirements and the need for visuals and restrictive openings, the University of Oregon turned to Max-R to help develop a bin unique to their program and needs on campus.

The UO Zero Waste Program ultimately wanted to customize their zero waste station to be a simple and inviting system that would be easy for students, faculty, staff, and visitors on campus to use. They chose to employ a side loading bin with restrictive openings so that as users approach the bin they are able to identify the waste stream by the opening. In addition to the restrictive openings, graphics on the door are used to identify exactly what goes into each waste stream to cut down on contamination. Depending on the area of campus, some bins feature a hinged top for the waste stream collection to enable faculty and students to empty their own deskside bins, cutting down on contamination and custodial costs.
